The weather on Valentine’s Day was calling for miserable, but as it often does on Cape Cod, it was just kidding. It turned out to be a perfect day for a snowy hike, so we’ve now added Old Jail Lane Conservation area to our list of ‘hiked that’. Of course we went there because of the glacial erratics (I am a huge fan of rocks), in particular Lookout Rock, where we’d read you could see the sea on a clear day. And who doesn’t want to see the sea?
We didn’t see another soul the entire time we were there, and we explored everywhere, well, almost everywhere. Turns out we’d taken one path which cut off the trail that took us to Lookout Rock. Lol. That’s really about the only part of the trail we missed, haha. So we knew we’d be back, and as long as it wasn’t pouring (though the weather forecast was giving us a good chance of that) we’d go back the next day.
My tracker said we hiked almost 3 miles, but the math didn’t quite add up, so we’re thinking it was probably a bit further than that ( I do have the habit of pausing it when I take my phone in and out of my pocket to take photos, haha)… Wrong or not, we spent a couple of hours, and saw lots of deer tracks, (but no deer, we were a bit loud crunching in the snow I think), and were amazed at the silence. (Other than noisy us of course!!) There were portions of the trail when we couldn’t hear anything except the occasional bird singing away… While hiking, we stop and enjoy the rocks, the nature, listening to the birds, looking at the lichen and trees and bark, hiking with me requires all of the senses, and a lot of time!!! Lol.
And of course, I love finding hearts (this is actually a combination of day 1’s hike, and day 2’s hike (when we went back to Lookout Rock), I was pleased to see a little love on the trail both days!
How about this erratic that said ‘Hi’ to us!!!
The trail was great, some little hills, but mostly easy hiking, wide trails to walk on, there are also bike trails through-out but that did not look easy, especially in the snow! Perhaps one of you brave, strong souls who bike there can leave a comment, because that’s not on my to do list anytime soon!!! My dog can’t hike with us any more, she’s too old now, but I love thinking about how much she would enjoy the trails we hike, and this one she’d have loved.
I came home with my pockets full of oak galls so I can have a go at making ink, they’re not something I find too often, so I was excited that I now have enough to try it… I’ll keep you posted. The only trash I added to my oak galls was a piece of bright orange tennis ball covering, so that made me happy too. I love being in nature and only seeing nature. If you’re unfamiliar with my obsession with picking up trash, please visit my Instagram.
I totally enjoyed Old Jail Lane Conservation area, it is very mellow, no crazy views or vistas, but it’s lovely and peaceful and walking in the pines and oaks must be delightful on hot, sunny days. It sure was delightful on a crisp winter day.
